Freelander TD4 2003 loss of power

Postby Danieo » 15 Nov 2010 09:30

Hi
I have bought a Freelander 2003 td4 in Jan this year and from day one I have problems.I was on holiday and on the way home driving 120km the car suddenly hesitated if there was something in the fuel system.Since then the car doesnt have any power when you stand still until 3000rpm but sometime it hesitates while driving it had cut out twice with my wife but not with me yet.I replaced the turbo and I still have the same problem.I have tested the car at a dealer saying that the LP sensor code now they say i must replace the LP pump.Is there a aternative pump that I can try I have spend so mush money or do some have an idea what might be the problem.I am staying in PTA.082 49 180 48.
Thanks Danie

Danie, get your FL to an indie workshop and have them do the tests, you should not trust stealers - they will want to replace expensive items and you may end up paying big bucks and the problem may re-appear!

indie = independent ;)

So you have used British 4x4 before? They have a good reputation, take your FL to them and see what they find out about the loss of power.

In all likelihood, a new fuel pump should do the trick. In the meantime, chuck a bottle of Wynns diesel cleaner in the tank and see if it runs any better.

Danie, in your shoes I would bite the bullet and get a new one - who knows what kind of diesel the 2nd hand one has has to deal with?

British 4x4 should be able to source the pump and fit it for you, and also diagnose any other issues on your FL. From now on, only use 50ppm (Sasol, if possible) and add 2-stroke oil (JASO-FC rating) in a 1:200 mix when you fill up.

A turbo stuck in the open position will indeed only deliver full boost above a certain rpm, it may be the issue.

Not sure about how to test the LP pump, but an LR mechanic should be able to tell whether it's working as intended straight away.

Hi. I read the discussion about the loss of power and i just wanted to find out about the benefit of adding 2 stroke oil to your fuel. One of the guys at Independant 4x4 also told me that there is a filter inside the Inlet manifold that needs replacing ever 100000k's or so. Apparently this can also cause a loss of power.
