Rims for Disco II

Postby colinwpa » 04 Feb 2010 10:33

Before anyone thinks I've really lost it, hear me out!

I'm looking for some steel rims (3) (8Jx16 5 Stud) to match the Disco II. Why? Well, I want to upgrade my offroad trailer to take the same wheel as the bus (yes, I'm buying a new axle & hubs for the trailer to match the Disco track and hubs ;) ) Since I'm putting new tyres on the bus, the old ones can find useful service for a while longer on the trailer which currently has 15" 6 stud rims and some worn tyres that need a new home. (free!)

So here is the question: What is the PCD for the Disco hubs? My measurements gives me 118.25mm, but the wheeler-dealer (no, not a stealer!) says it should be 120mm. So who is right?

Does anyone have any rims like I need that they want to "move on"?

Thanks all!

Hi, great minds think alike! I have the same set-up for my 4x4 home-built trailor (steel rims), same size tyres (245/75 x 16) and rims for my Disco 1 (alum)! Works great!

I am not sure of the pcd for the Disco 2, but I know it is different to the Disco 1, Defender and RR Classic, which are all the same!

I am sure someone with more knowledge re the Disoc 2 will confirm the pcd for you,

don't give up, you are on the right track! cheers, Craig :D

Why not go the route of BMW 5 series rims which are mags. The pcd is the same as the disco 2 but the scrub radius or offset is different.

Well I seem to have scored an amazing luck here! This morning I went to fit some new tyres to the bus, Yokohama Geolander A/T-S at WEST COAST TYRES in Milnerton. They quoted me R1720 a tyre, nearly R800 less than I was quoted by TW&T! Whilst I was there I asked if they had any white expoxy rims to match the bus, namely 16x8J with a 120pcd 5 stud. Searching through, the assistant said no-way, none in stock and that he doubted they made such a size. So I asked if he had any rims to match my needs, mag or otherwise. Scanning through again, nothing showed up, until right at the end of the list on his computer screen, lo and behold, a set of 5 LR rims, second hand mind you, but the right size and width. A quick check in the stock room revealed 5 genuine LR rims exactly the same as fitted to my bus!
"How much do you want for them?" I asked tentatively. "Lets go have a look on the system...". A few deft fingers on the keyboard, "R180 per rim, excluding the VAT". "What? You must be joking!" I snorted! "Nope he said, that's what they are listed at. Some oke at LR Centre owed us some money he couldn't pay, so we took his rims in lieu. They've been in the back of our stockroom for months now!". "Right, I'll take three! And how much to fit my old tyres, including balancing and new valves?" "R154.51, including the VAT!"

So now I have 8 LR Mags, 4 on the road on the bus shod with brand new Yokos, one spare on the door (also a Geolander"), and another 3 ready to mount on the trailer when I get the new axle, also with Geolanders on them! :P

I cannot speak highly enough of these guys at WEST COAST TYRES, they are really great, and would recommend folks here in CT to give them a call when they're looking for tyres!

Cheers :D

I would rather go for the standard disco mags on the trailer as well. Landrover rims were designed to take a beating - BMW ims bent when hitting a Sandton pothole, nevermind rock crawling up van Zyls pass.

Philip at http://www.rangies.co.za has a ccouple of Disco2 mags, give him a buzz.

Of course now I have a new issue. Nuts! Well of course I phoned the stealers to get a benchmark, R120 a nut and I need 10! (that's the ex VAT price too!, and not the "security nuts" either, they're R500 each  ). So the nuts will cost more than the wheels! :o . Of course, I didn't really expect it to be otherwise, but ho hum, I guess I'll have to scurry round the 2nd hand spares blokes to see if any of them can help! :(

Right on the button there! Gave him a call this morning, what a gentleman! Ended up chatting for a good 45 minutes and bought 13x wheel nuts (at R10 a pop  ) -and- the complete spare wheel bracket off a D2 for R250, so I can attach the trailer spare to the trailer in style! To top all that, he's posting it all down to me for R50, and by this afternoon I got the tracking notice to say it was on it's way!!! How's that for service!

He also alerted me to the false security the "lock" nuts give! Easily removed without the key, he does it all the time when he gets a wreck in. So there you go, good service and wisdom too! Can't beat it! ;)
