Can anyone explain the logic of having a half-inch drive on the transfer box filler plug but a Torx 55 on the R380 gearbox plug?
Is there anywhere else on the whole vehicle that needs a Torx 55?

Re: R380 gearbox filler plug
R380 was a new design, mated to the old existing transfer case.
Bloody stupid in my opinion.
I changed the filler plug on mine to a blank-off for water piping, same thread pitch, it can now be easily removed with a 13mm spanner.
The water pipe blankoff is taper threaded, so put just a little bit of silicone sealer on the thread and don't over tighten it.
