Forewward-Backward Motion

Postby driesdej » 16 Nov 2016 10:16

Defender 200Tdi station wagon
Over months I have developped a forward-backward motion while driving and the backlash on crown wheel and pinion has become more.
Very slow, heavy accelaration and taking all power off it goes away.
I checked the Radial arm bushes and replaced them as they were worn badly (helped slightly)
Recently I heard a sudden tick-tick sound from the front axle and thought it was CV joint problems.
Opened up thinking to replace CV jiont but found them still in good shape, no play - replaced seals and bearings. It is becoming worse.
I suspect a broken tooth on my crown wheel and pinion and that the excesive backlash is causing the forward-backward motion as the rear tries to play catch-up with the front.
Does that make sence to the wise out there ???
help much apreciated.

Dries, unfortunately not many people on the forum any more, so you may want to also ask on http://www.4x4community.co.za/ and http://www.defender2.net/

Maybe take off one of the propshafts to the suspect axle and see if the situation improves?

indeed, with one propshaft removed, you will have to engage the CDL

Hi Dries,
Splines, splines and more splines.....You might want to check prop-shaft, side-shafts and diff spider assemblies....In that order. I had those done to remove that pull away CLUNK!

Regards
Theo

ps. It's rather sad to see so little movement on this forum.
