New itch. Started the td5 defender this morning.
Normal idle.
Then all of a sudden it revved up to 1000 rpm and I was no were near the pedal.
Any ideas?

Idle is determined or regulated due to manifold vacuum usually. Aircon was off?

A surge in engine speed will be associated with a surge in diesel supply to the engine.

Several possibilties

Partially blocked fuel filter
Defective MAF/MAF plug connectors
Defective accelerator potentiometer
Defective fuel pressure regulator

If possible have a diagnostic test done - it might just indicate the source of the problem.

Hi Dave, thanks for your input. While shunting on the Hiway yesterday, I noticed that the heat gauge was fluctuating and then hit the blue line solid. I pulled over, high idle again. I popped the hood and when I touched the heat sensor plug, the Rev's came down. Checked the heat guage and it was normal again. Will keep you posted. Regards Theo.

My 300tdi SW used to overheat when the headlights were switched on! The cause is a bad earth between the engine and the bulkhead - I added a braided earth cable and the problem was fixed. This is a common fault with Defenders.
