2002 Defender TD5 Gearbox, Transfer Box and Diff oils

Postby MichaelStr » 14 Aug 2020 15:42

Hi,

I want to replace the Gearbox, transfer box and diff oils on my 2002 TD5 defender.
I read a very informative article here about the recommended oils to use.

For the gear box Castrol VMX (Semi synthetic) 75W80 GL-4, I was told by Land Rover to use Castrol MTF94

For the Transfer Box and Diffs Castrol EPX 80W90 GL-5, I was told by Land Rover to use EP90 that's all they said.

I know nothing about oils and am not sure how old the article is so need some advice on what to use.

Basically just looking for someone to say go to Midas and buy this :-)

This is my primary vehicle and I have enjoyed doing all the repairs on it thus far just getting a bit frustrated at this point as these oils are expensive
and I don't want to waste money I really don't have (we use the vehicle for our non-profit) also don't want to do anything that might cause damage.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

Those will work fine.

Another option for the gearbox is Castrol BOT402 but as far as I know, Castrol Syntrans 75W90 full synthetic is the same spec.

For the transfer case and diffs, Castrol Syntrax would be best.

I used these on my V8 110 CSW and had a noticable reduction in transmission heat as well as better gearbox shifts.
