Puma Defender

Postby frikkieh » 12 Jan 2016 21:51

While travelling down to CapeTown today the defender suddenly lost power in 6th gear while overtaking a lorry on a slight incline. On gearing down while the vehicle slowed down power returned while in 3rd gear and the Landy accelerated once more. The engine did not cut out . This is worrying as it could prove extremely dangerous in certain circumstances. Any possible suggestions as to the cause?

Sounds like the Defender went into to limp mode . A not uncommon problem with the Puma . There is temp sensor that protects the head (similar in use to an EGT gauge) from over temperature.
There is apparently not a simple solution.
But stage one is to ensure that you have max airflow into the engine. Ensure that the airfilter is as good as new.
Stage two is fit a high capacity intercooler to pull more air through . I have read several reports where owners have fixed this problem with a bigger intercooler. And the car then gets a useful performance increase
Of course this might be due to some other problem. But the recent hot weather is consistent with it being head temperature related

Thanks - will look into the intercooler option. Will give you feedback once I have something positive.

I've never had this issue, but then again I have taken preventative measures just in case:

1. Remove the cat (take it off, drill out the innards and put back)
2. Bigger intercooler (from Alisport, but the current forex is going to moer you stukkend)
3. BAS remap (again, forex will klap you)
4. Remove the centre silencer box
5. If you have the 2.4 Puma, get a fan spacer, it does make a difference (http://www.torqtune.co.za/index.php?rou ... uct_id=587)

And of course, you should fit a Madman so that you can monitor the EGT and other vitals - that was the first thing I did when I bought my Puma.

Tell me more about the fan spacer - sounds interesting. Have requested a price from Elton at turbochip for the intercooler.

the 2.2's fan is much closer to the radiator than the 2.4's fan, so Torqtune made a spacer to move the fan closer.

since I fitted it, coolant temperature is about 2-4 lower.

Time flies and all of a sudden it is 2017. Since my original problem I fitted an intercooler manufactured by Elton. Since then, only on one occasion did the vehicle went into limp mode, again when towing a caravan. This time I had the vehicle remapped by ATM automotive in Hillcrest. So far so good.
